Romancing Vintage Books Soon to Be Extinct

Old Books: Why We Love Them Retro Chalet
Above:  Real Entries from a vintage diary.

The Glory of Vintage Books

Some of my favorite things when picking for antiques or decor treasures for my home, is carefully looking for forgotten paper items.  Even better, when this paper is in the form of an old book.  Some serious book collectors will examine the spines, the condition of the pages, and of course, if the book is a first print or not. They will also look at circulation. I'm about the romance of the item itself.

Vintage Diary RetroChalet
In My Collection:  Five Year Diary Circa 1930. They didn't leave much room to write!

Why We Love Them in Shabby Condition

The first reason is curiosity and love for a vintage item. The old diary above, has seen better days. With a spine missing and pages discolored, the previous owner wrote her one to three sentence updates in the 30's.  Maybe part of me feels a bit dramatic for saying the sheer curiosity of the item drew me to it. What was it like living in the 30's and what things did this person write about? Who was she? Is she now passed or still alive somewhere?  Suddenly I wanted to know.  I was stuck to the small diary much like someone stuck on a reality show.  The cover itself sucked me in with the adorable Victorian children and original shabby condition just makes it look more appropriate for my decor. A silk cord rope was put in the book by the previous owner to indicate just where she left off.   I fell right in love with the thing and it was under $10. I don't know what an item like this is worth, but perhaps to the right person it's worth whatever price they are willing to pay.  Note to self: shred my diary.

Vintage Fairy Book
From my shelf:  This book just makes my heart skip a beat.

Ernest Endres wrote about many fairies and gnomes yet much is missing about the author. Could this be a pen name for the publisher Ernest Nister, a famous turn of the century book printer and book publisher?  The book above is a first print and falling apart, much love and stained, held together with masking tape. This I did spend about $50 for, only because I loved it so and it's rare and something that I won't part with.  For me this book is rare and adorable. Combine the two and it's love at first site.  But where do you find these in better shape? Only if they are digitized from a good version, but the fact of the matter is these prints show their stained and shabby age, and were lovingly created by the author.

Vintage Gnomes Book Ernest Nister
Circa 1900 era the publisher may have been the author. I am not certain.

From decor and art standpoints, I like to display old books in my home. The ones on my fireplace mantle are for sale on Etsy.  I used the ones at the bottom of the page to create a free Etsy shop banner. I also use some of the old more common books that are falling apart, to decoupage old switch plate covers and in my collage art work.  I love old paper and old books.  Don't you?

Leave me a note and tell me what are your thoughts with old books.  Do you have a story of a book you loved so much?  My concerns are now, when we live in such a digital age, using cellphones for everything, I feel old books will old day be obselete.  Perhaps going green means using your iBooks and not your Library card......

Perhaps the fact of romance from days gone by never gets old.
French Post Cards Collection
Gorgeous Written letters just waiting to be had. @RetroChalet

RetroChalet now has many lots available from a huge French post card buyout: stamped, unstamped, written or unwritten.  It seems after taking French two years to be exact,  I cannot for the life of me read these.

How romantic that loved ones, friends and neighbors traveled on vacation to areas of  France sending back greetings and salutations. Many have old stamps or post marks which would look great in collage and scrapbooking.

Many collectors of post cards may find them interesting to read, they are in  dull used shabby condition.

Go see them here:

Mother's Day Christmas Greeting Cards ECards

mothers day card vintage
Retro mother's day card  like this one are getting hard to find. Credit: KidsAtHeartDesigns.

Modern Ideas for Vintage Mother's Day Cards

Many people seek out one of a kind vintage cards for Mother's Day, Christmas, or Birthdays. Shopping around for these cards can be quite tiring, and overall stock from retro times is dwindling.  Often used, torn, paper damaged, or yellowed it's becoming harder and harder to find old cards in good shape for gift giving. Sadly once you give them where do they end up?

Now you could make your own greeting cards, but why do all that work and waste paper when there is an Eco Friendly idea that implements vintage styling?

ojolie ecards
Lovely retro chic styling in animated ecards.  If you want to see this little bird fly, go to ojolie.com

Ojolie

I'm talking about  Ojolie.com , who offers beautiful, animated ecards with tasteful music for birthday, Christmas and other occasions and holidays. Their mother day ecards  are simply gorgeous and the site is easy to navigate and use.  A shot above does not do the site justice, as the cards are animated, where the birds will fly around and make the day of your loved one.

Check them out you won't be sorry! I have been playing around there all day!

Vintage Wrapping Paper Ephemera For Crafts and More

Raggedy Ann wrapping paper $6.95 at Lady Libertine Vintage
Vintage wrapping paper, how did it all survive? Left in the bottom of someone's drawer, or in a box of holiday mayhem just waiting for the right occasion.....then...forgotten forever.  Or was it? Not so, thanks to it showing up in thrift stores, estate sales, scrounged up by the younger generation, who loved that old wrapping paper just as much as if it was brand spankin' new.  Something our grandparents grimaced at we just adore.
9 unused Rolls found totaling 450 feet, $52 at RetroChalet.

Welcome to the creative reuse.  Vintage wrapping paper may be used for wrapping gifts, but over time the paper may become brittle or rip when bending around the corners of the package.  So you may use it for:
  • Mixed Media Work
  • Cut out a small snippet and put it on a package tag
  • Cut out a 4"x4" square and glue to the front of a kraft paper card, give the cards for Christmas!
  • Use to faux-wrap a customer's purchase if you sell antiques before shipping.
  • Use in gift bags, crumbling it up tissue-paper style.
I just adore the way JenuinePaper used recycled snippets and made this card $4

Old Comic Books and Comics Make for Great Vintage Things

Ad for my shop.
Old comic graphics are fab. I never really paid attention to them so much, until I worked as a Secretary for a Comic Book Distributor. I worked for Steve Geppi, then got hooked, and turned into a 27 year old comic book geek.  I voluntarily wanted to take a transfer from Front Desk into Customer Service, (which most people thought was crazy) to delve more into the Comic World.
Bombus offers this high end comic book plate at $185.
I ended up being the Service Rep distributing to all Northeast - Southern Accounts. Georgia, some Florida, North Carolina--this was my territory.  All of my customers were shop owners. After taking a road trip and visiting some of my stores such as Russ at Capitol Comics of Raleigh,  soon grew my love for North Carolina.   Customer Service was a hard job back then, due to the now-defunct old warehouse always screwing up my customer's orders. Which meant as stores, they didn't have that issue for their customers on the big shipment day. If they were out, customers went to stores that had the "big issue" and so my customers lost business. In the small world of comics, repeatedly getting screwed or shorted on orders, could easily put you out of business.  I think if my customers had been serviced out of a different warehouse, I would have stayed there as long as I could as it was a cool job!
DoodleBugLane offers this from 1973 for only $4.50
I offset my constant frustration of screaming customers with gettin my weekly fix of free comics, toys and gifts which were promotional items send from the manufacturer to the Service Reps.   I received all kinds of cool promo items, which still sit in my attic years over ten years later--one day hoping I have one "holy grail" in those boxes.

Ecoweaver offers this great comic book pendant for only $10.
I am always envious of those with so much talent on Etsy.  EcoWeaver makes art and jewelry from recycled components. What's even more special is how she (Trinity) told me about giving up her famous musical career to take care of her husband who suffered a paralyzing accident.  Her Etsy shop contains comic book pendants among other things--and you can feel good about making purchases to help her as she is now full time care-giver to him and relies on Etsy for supplemental income.  Her comic designs are here, and this one is my favorite:
Aquaman Mera Flipper Comic Book Necklace, $65, Ecoweaver

Set of 3 Archie Book-Style Comics, only $7 at Gingerscraps.

Comic Book Earrings, $32, nises2pieces

How to Draw Comics (Walter Foster) $5.00 from DirtyBirdiesVintage
The majority of old comics people will tell you, "aren't worth the paper they are printed on", due to the fact condition plays a major part in their value.  They can be found still for a quarter at certain flea markets or even in comic shops who are running sales.  What I think is the beauty is in the eye of the beholder.  One wall of my home is lined with old comics as decoration--even though the comics themselves are ratty, they are old and in sleeves and their 12 cent price makes a great conversation piece with visitors.
Kudos to Junksy who has repurposed them into cool picture frames around $14.50 each.

Comic Book Bangle Bracelet by GraphicNovelties, $15
Comic Salvage, for only $18 offers this great ring!
Bombus (again) with cool comic covered notebooks, $29.

Sketchbook $18 from CrabAppleDesign
Bombus's comic book chair ( $540 )made the London Times!
