Studio Vintage Curiosities and Collectibles

vintage washboard from etsy shop studiovintage
Studio Vintage Washboard $55.95

Today's featured shop is Studio Vintage, found on Etsy. This shop is from Canada and offers the best curiosities, antiques and collectibles. From french farmhouse to shabby cottage chic, you never know what you may find. Shipping most items to the USA is not an issue, shipping is affordable and fair. Here are some of our favorite finds.  Above, a washboard would make a great addition to the wall, in the washroom or foyer.

Purple vintage apron from studiovintage on etsy
StudioVintage purple apron find, oh so lovely. Reg Price $18.95

Oh my how we adore the vintage apron above in purple paisley. A cute fun frolicking item and aprons like these in original form and in good shape are becoming harder and harder to find. Most of us must settle for reproductions but this is in the original form and worth every penny! For the hostess with the mostess or fabulous entertainer, nab this baby before it's gone.

Green Depression Glass on Sale
Studio Vintage has this green depression glass on sale!

One of the best things about shopping for vintage is you never know what may possess you for starting a collection. At one time green depression glassware was untouchable in price. Being that it's more affordable now, it is a worthy item to start collecting. Not only does it look fabulous in a china cabinet or hutch, but may be something fun for treasure hunting or thrifting. The divided dish above would function well in an office or boudoir to hold your pins, rings, necklaces, and things.
Green Depression Glass Collection
Start a depression glass collection, the time is now!

Unique to this Etsy shop is the fact the curator/owner "S." notices the small things, like door plates, rusty hinges, and knobs or adornments that may be otherwise overlooked or forgotten. You will find a plethora of these notions in her shop.  She says, "Nothing beats the rush when from across the room, I spy, an amazing find and have to maneuver quickly to scoop it up! Returning to the Studio after a morning's haul is a magical time. It is then, that I get to lovingly inspect each piece, marvelling at the uniqueness, craftsmanship, and design - wondering what stories this time honoured piece may hold. As I photograph these beautiful pieces for listing, I wonder who might stumble across them, celebrate their beauty as I do and give them a new home."
Vintage Rusty Farmhouse Hinge
Shabby Hinge @ Studio Vintage is great for many uses including folk art and functionality of a shabby towel drying rack!

Above, the hinge was spotted on a sale at $8.64, but even for regular price of $11.95 this unique item with scalloped edging can be used for many things.  You can use the hinge in craft making or simply mount in your kitchen for a towel drying rack. We love it shabby and left alone, but you could paint to match your decor. We've also seen a piece of wood adorned with these type hinges, made into a folk art Christmas tree. (see below)

This lovely antique Victorian hinge shows it's years of paint aka character.

Collect several styles and varieties to make something wonderful.  Perhaps adorning a towel rack, making a wooden birdhouse, or something like the below will give you motivation to see the beauty in every little thing like StudioVintage does.

Make your own folk art with hinges and adornments. This little tree could be possible with placing different hinges back to back!

2goodponiesvintage on Etsy is our featured shop today. There are all kinds of great items to be had.  Today we're highlighting sterling silver trinket and flatware. George W. Shiebler Sterling Silver Fork and Spoon, Tiffany Silver, Kings

George W. Shiebler Sterling Silver Fork and Spoon, Tiffany Silver, Kings Pattern $199

Some sterling silver is hard to find, like the above Kinds pattern fork and knife originally sold by Tiffany & Co, dating back 1876-1910. Hallmarked and lovely, made by George W. Sheibler of New York.  The shop is curated by Karyn and Jay in Johnson City, Tennessee (who started her collecting bug when she went to her first swap meet in grade school.)

Sterling Silver Baby Rattle

Ironically you don't see many sterling teething rings or baby rattles, the one above is from 1939 and attached to a Mother of Pearl teething ring. Certainly for the rich and famous, quite lovely after all these years.    Although most of the above items are sterling silver, the item below is actually pewter, although made by the Stieff company - this is a Kirk Stieff Pewter Bracelet, unique at best.

Vintage Orange Juice Pitchers and Glasses

LemonHeadpress on Etsy
Deal of the Century:  $14 gets you the pitcher and glasses at LemonHeadPress

Orange You Smart?

There used to be an old song on television when I was growing up as a kid. In fact, I found a Youtube Video circa 1982.  Instead of aren't you smart they did Orange you smart, which was catchy and a nice little play on words.  The parts I remember went like this :

"Orange you smart, for drinking orange juice, for that clean and sunny sunny taste...orannnngeeeege you smart................"

Pitchers in the kitchen with glasses for breakfast didn't just happen in the 50's and 60's but into the 70's and 80's when I was a kid.  It was a big thing having a square breakfast before school. Up until that time mom's didn't always work and mine was home taking care of us making us eat our cereal and drink our juice. That was a lot of liquid let me tell you!  Now those days are long gone, most parents are both working.

LookBackVintage on Etsy has this set for $18

Perhaps the best thing about collecting is these look great on the table . Prices above are considered low and very fair to account for shipping charges.   Orange juice memorabilia can brighten up any retro kitchen.  The vintage milk caps below, even took time to advertise orange juice.

Juice Caps from Vintage Rescue Squad
A cute collectible, these milk caps, get all 40 pcs for $5 at VintageRescueSquad on Etsy

Caps could be fashioned into something fun for the kitchen or in craft projects.  I always thought putting a magnet on the back would make for very cute fridge magnets, or poking a hole and using them for adornments on a fruit basket given to a sick friend. Taking the kitchen decorating a step further, you could look for Florida merchandise. Associated with oranges, Florida was a great place to find kitschy novelties shaped like oranges.

These coasters are souvenirs of Florida, fromVeesVintage are only $6

Corny little oranges can adorn your whole kitchen and look cute in the process. Tons of salt and peppers are on the market for a few bucks.  Find retro orange aprons, tea towels and prints for the kitchen.

Forgotten Commodities Vintage Kitchen Wares Galore

Vintage Milk Bottle on Etsy
Vintage milk bottle a steal at only $6.95 on Etsy shop ForgottenCommodities
We have found this great Etsy shop called Forgotten Commodities which features a large selection of vintage kitchen wares. We had a chance to talk to the owner, Tiffany all the way from Elkhart, Indiana and found out what makes inspires her!

Q :  Why and when did you start selling vintage?

A: I opened my shop in June 2014. I have a love and appreciation of all things vintage, with a specific interest in housewares and décor. I began collecting vintage items over the last decade and realized that I had so much of it in my home that I needed to spread the love to make room for more. Instead of simply donating to the local thrift store, I decided that I could turn my hobby into a money making opportunity. So now I can still enjoy "picking" to my hearts content, and share it with the world via my Etsy shop.

Q: What your favorite vintage items are or what you collect?

A: I absolutely love vintage items that can store something inside. Be it crates, canisters, tins, or cases. There's something about the dual purpose of an item that appeals to me. First that it's decorative and appealing to the eyes, and also that it's practical and has a real purpose. Let's face it, we all need the extra storage. What better way to get it than to put your home décor to work?

Vintage Rooster Glasses at forgotten Commodities
These glasses are $19.95 and from 60's-70's era. Would match lots of 70's era gold and browns decor in your vintage kitchen!

Q: Anything currently in your shop with a great story?

A: In my shop there is a set of drinking glasses. I was out with a friend yard sale-ing and we happened upon a sale that didn't seem to have a whole lot to offer. There really wasn't much to see and I just about turned around to leave when in my peripheral vision I saw a box under a table, as if it had been stored away and wasn't for sale. I figured I'd check anyway. The lady running the sale said she wasn't going to set it out for sale because she didn't think anyone would be interested, but she offered to let me take a look. The box was old and beat up, torn in a couple places even. But inside was a complete and immaculate set vintage glasses that I instantly fell in love with. So I made them mine! It was hard to come to the decision to sell them, but alas they are for sale.

Antique Tin Cookware
Very rare and unusual Antique Tin Cookware, $49.95 just waiting to be had!

Q: What item will you hate to see go and why?

A: Of all the lovelies for sale in my shop I do have a few contenders for the hardest thing to let go of. But I'd have to say the set of three antique tin cookware is at the top. They couldn't be use for cooking now, but would be amazing on a wall! It's vintage, rustic, well aged and has a nice patina...need I say more?

Black Iron Rooster
Black Iron Rooster, $10.95 would make a nice kitchen door stop.

Q: Anything else you want folks to know?

A:  I'd invite all true vintage lovers to visit my shop and share in my hobby!

This is $62 with s/h to US at 24.50, , total investment of $86 makes it a unique find !.
In her shop we've found a ton of great vintage enamelware that you just don't see everyday.  She has most likely found it in her travels, and shipping to the US is not that expensive considering these are rare examples you don't find here in the States.  One could simply indulge in adding wonderful and unique additions to their kitchen enamelware collection.

French Enamelware Bread Box from Etsy shop
This is simply so wonderful. You could keep your bread and all kinds of crackers in this , $115!

My favorite has to be the giant bread box above. It's evidence of former life makes it all the more shabby and one could stick bread, crackers and bagels in here!

Tea Party Tea Time Vintage Style Virtual Party Invitation Etsy Love

Bone China tea cup from Bunny Rabbit Vintage.
Tonight it was snowing in Baltimore, and I wanted so badly to go make a cup of tea. You see, here in America I was raised on coffee (sigh), but tea is something I consider a real treat! Unfortunately for me, it is a quick drop-in-cup and micowave deal (or if I have the time, hot water brewed in a pot and dumped in a cup).  Tonight I made Stash English Breakfast Tea and added some mint leaves microwave-style. I imagine the Queen would be very upset with me and send me away to my room to rot.

Oh how I dreamt of and wished as a child I was raised in England or Canada so I'd be more in tune with tea, tea parties, and tea time! The sound of a tea kettle...I feel as though I was robbed by not having that in my daily life. In fact, I'm going to say to heck with missing out as a child, and have a virtual tea party right now. I can and I will! So, you are invited and I hope you'll join me. This is probably what I'd wear to tea time, because I'd want to look the part.
Lovely tea time party dress from LipStickWhiskey

You see, I do believe there is something lovely and romantic about the whole tea-drinking experience. I can't wait to see my tea friends and catch up on old times. A vintage girls day out, only with good tea.  I have arrived at your place, as you are hosting the party. It's warm there. No snow at all.  I see you have set the table oh-so-lovely.  Sigh, just what I had imagined:

Chippendale Rosenthal Tea Set at Antiqfinds.
But where is the tea?  Oh, I see patience is a virtue I am lacking. You are breaking out the vintage secret stash of tea. What is this? Green Tea? English Breakfast? Only the best for this tea party! Suprise me!

I can only imagine how good the original contents were--shop Pea Pickins $12.
English it is!  So after the tea bag is sitting in the cup out comes the hot water. Swish, I can hear it pouring. Steeping in the cup I am hoping it finishes quickly, as I am so ready to taste a cup. I'm a bit messy, so I'm going to need a tea bag holder, like a pro tea drinker would, but I am not sure if that's an American thing or how they really did it back then. I would imagine something is needed to put my tea bag on so that it won't mess up your beautiful tablecloth.  Oh no....something in my virtual tea party is going incredibly wrong, I am imagining them as tiny cows (probably since my husband is some famous bbq guy,  hint of reality is interfering with my ability to imagine a dainty tea holder. Oh no! Cows!)

Sally's Serendipity is selling tea bag holders that are cows.
As we start to cackle and laugh and discuss how your week was, how the tea bag holders are cows,  how are the kids, the pets, the dog, and hubby....I notice that my tea's a bit strong so I would like a cube of sugar. "One lump please..."
Polly Go Lightly has just the tool for sugar lumps...for sale in her Etsy shop!
Much better. No cream today thank you. I am being filled with the aroma of scumptious smelling tea, and good company.  So what were we discussing? Oh yes...tell me about that book you've been reading......We are now surrounded by the dainty cups, and people serving us crisps with our tea.  Did I mention I loved what you are wearing?  You look divine!
Party dresses and more vintage clothing at gogovintage!
I know, I know, the red dress is a bit over the top but I imagined you Marilynesque in our vintage tea party.  Now that you've shown off your dress and danced around so gracefully, you seem to have dropped your purse.

Mad Hatters Party get it at Vintage Leather Artist on Etsy

Truth be told I must be going, as reality calls. If more truth be told it may be that I envy you--for you may not have had to have a virtual tea party, but actually experienced morning tea, afternoon tea, and tea time.Have you? If so I would really love to hear all about it.  It was nice meeting you. Goodbye.

Fiesta Dinnerware Homer Laughlin China Company

These available at VintageFiestaware.com with the original sticker!

I really love Fiesta Dinnerware.  It was made from 1936 to 1973, then reintroduced in 1986.  The vintage colors and items are all very collectible.  The new post 1986 items can be as well.  This is due to some colors and items have been "retired" aka discontinued.
It's just pretty, these Rose cups, a discontinued color now available at Bedouin.

I use Fiesta in my home on a daily basis.  What I love most in baking and cooking in it. My items never stick and it's easy to clean. I can microwave in it or bake in it.  I'm asking Santa for the large rectangular baker and loaf pan this Christmas.
Read my Squidoo Article on Fiesta HERE.
Colors like Lilac, Sapphire or new Chartreuse were only produced one to two year runs. On top of that certain items like Pyramid Candlesticks and Coffee Carafes were discontinued so these designs no matter what color may end up being worth their weight in cash.  In fact, I just read  that Homer Laughlin China Company announced the following items will be moved to inactive availability AKA Discontinued as of December 31st, 2011.
  • 0448   Carafe w/handle
  • 0490   Bud Vase 6”
  • 0499   Relish/Utility Tray
These available at HisPalette

Vintage Crocks, Ringware and Stoneware Bowls Farmhouse Chic is Here to Stay

vintage ringware bowls
Can you tell which bowls are vintage and which are reproductions? Read on and find the answer at the bottom of article.

For those of you who aren't into ringware or stoneware, or those old vegetable crocks, once you see their functionality in the kitchen, you just may be!   I will be the first to admit,  I wasn't a big fan of chunky ceramics. In fact I associated most old primitives with dull yellows, dirty looking creams, or browns which turned me off.  Over time I began to love them. Collecting them can be fun, exciting and a bit of a mystery. Like the orange bowl below, much older pottery is not marked, and may only show the marks of industrial manufacturing of yesteryear. Some may leave us with many questions as to their origin.
Orange ringware Bowl
MoxieDeluxe offers this orange ringware bowl for $60
nice ringware crock
Whippoorwheel offers this great bowl from the USA for $25!

Whippoorwheel explains, "This crock is a beautiful representation of Americana. I can see it full of big red apples or festive fall gourds on the center of your table or center island. Pretty two tone colors of blue and cream set it apart."   I would have to agree, this bowl has minor flaws, but the price is right to hold your vegetables, notions, or fruits on the counter just perfectly. It is also odd to see ringware on the bottom, and handles on the side, making this bowl a ooak find!

old crock bowl ringware mixing bowl
Old Crazed Granny Bowl $22 at VintageStarrBeads
I don't mind buying an old bowl that may have crazing, age wear,  or have minor chips or cracks when in fact they will only be used for display of potatoes, onions, bananas, or apples. These are the ones to be had for the best pricing and have the best history. the or minor cracked up bowl.   Diehard collectors may think that's just crazy, (and of course they aren't going to gain value) but I think these are the bowls with the most character, history, and that can be had for the best bargain prices. For a fraction of a "mint condition" bowl, I won't mind if it suffers an accidental mishap down the road.

ringware bauer bowl
I love my old stoneware bowls and crocks. Imperfectly perfect is okay with me.  See my mother's famous meatball recipe HERE.

As for the early primitive colors, I used to think if crockery was brown, it should be put down and left on the shelf at the thrift store or flea market for someone else to adopt. I no longer think this is the case, because I've grown to love the way in which the items were made, you can't get thick bowls like this one below anymore...
primitive crock
This bowl, for $15 is a steal at 5girls09s on Etsy.
This bowl would look great with bright Vidalia onions or Granny Smith apples in it! Mix and match the neutrals and off colors with the vibrant brights for a great display!  Magazines like Country Living, Martha Stewart, and Southern Living often use stoneware bowls in their articles. I can see this bowl full of fresh chives out of my garden, the bright green against the dirt brown would look au' naturale! (I've even seen bowls like this holding colorful yarn balls once and it looked fab.)

old crocks great for storage clay crock
Revival Style offers these Bauer Crocks, and ringware, crocks, and bowls in her shop.

The above crocks are just perfect for storing potatoes or onions in your kitchen. The thick ceramic keeps the vegetables cool and prolongs their life.  It also saves you room in the fridge.  The ones above are in cool off white, versus the normal browns you often see.  They are a bright and attractive addition to your kitchen.  If you don't have room there,  they also serve well as magazine holders in the living room, or to hold umbrellas by your front door.

Gorgeous Yellow Crock Bowl
The best part of old bowls is you never know what colors you will find. This beautiful one is a bargain at $20 from thefarmerswifect

$TIP$ To achieve total Farmhouse Chic on a budget, start with some less desirable colors and make them look beautiful with what you put in them. Get artistic! Fresh cut flowers from the garden or herbs laying inside or across old brown bowls would look lovely. Cream or shabby muted bowls that appear a bit dingy and less desirable will look lovely holding red apples or red onions. You can use your imagination and spice up any old bowl into something grand. Chipped up or slightly crazed finds may serve as good fill ins until you can afford better examples, and who knows, you may grow to love them as much as their former owners did.

Buyer Beware: If you are looking for true VINTAGE stoneware mixing bowls or crocks do your research as some are being reproduced today.  In fact, I've seen a few repros floating around that could easily fool any of us.  Check out this page at the Bauer Pottery company, where you can look at their nesting bowls which strongly resemble the ones of yesteryear and are available in most sizes!

Roseville Pottery is making "oven / microwave safe" reproductions of their bowls, in fact, in the very first photo of this article, the large cream bowl with blue ring is a newer repro. Luckily I was able to tell when I realized that older vintage bowls were not microwave safe!   Walmart has  many stoneware mixing bowls that look old, but newer reproductions may have keywords like "MADE IN CHINA" or "MICROWAVE SAFE" to tip you off.

Old Vintage Kitchen 1927
This was my kitchen in my old house, now long gone. I miss it.  Circa 1927

Fiesta by Homer Laughlin is of course still offering their stoneware bowls and dinnerware today, and I use plenty of them in my kitchen. I have to say that my Fiesta casseroles are the best, (round, and new small individual size). They go right in the oven and I find with a little Pam they don't stick like Pyrex or other vintage cookware does.

Hubby is a chef and cooks in nothing else than my Fiesta Pie Bakers and Casseroles.  So it is we mix the old in with the new, leaving shabby vintage bowls to adorn my kitchen full of fruits and vegetables.  Sometimes, a vintage girl can mix some new in with the old for a good effect.♥
